Social Media Image Sizes in 2026: The Complete Cheat Sheet

Published April 28, 2026 · By Tom Cannon

Social media platforms are constantly changing their layouts, and using the wrong image size means your content gets cropped, stretched, or compressed into a blurry mess. Here's every dimension you need for every major platform in 2026, plus tips for creating images that look great everywhere.

Instagram

Feed post (square): 1080x1080 pixels. Still the safest option — looks good on all devices. Feed post (portrait): 1080x1350 pixels (4:5 ratio). Takes up more screen real estate than square, which means more engagement. This is the recommended size for maximum impact. Feed post (landscape): 1080x566 pixels (1.91:1 ratio). Gets less screen space than portrait — avoid unless the content demands landscape. Stories and Reels: 1080x1920 pixels (9:16 ratio). Full-screen vertical format. Keep important content within the center 1080x1420 area to avoid the username and UI overlays. Profile picture: 320x320 pixels, displayed as a circle at 150x150.

Twitter/X

In-stream image (single): 1600x900 pixels (16:9). Twitter crops to this ratio in the timeline. In-stream image (two images): Each 700x800 pixels. Header/banner: 1500x500 pixels. Profile picture: 400x400, displayed as circle. Card image: 1200x628 (for link previews with meta tags).

Facebook

Feed post: 1200x630 pixels works best for most content. Cover photo: 820x312 on desktop, 640x360 on mobile. Use 820x462 to cover both — the top and bottom get cropped on desktop but show on mobile. Profile picture: 170x170 on desktop, 128x128 on mobile. Upload at 400x400 minimum. Event cover: 1200x628. Group cover: 1640x856.

LinkedIn

Feed post: 1200x627 for landscape, 1080x1080 for square, 1080x1350 for portrait. Portrait format is increasingly favored by the algorithm for higher engagement. Profile picture: 400x400, displayed as circle. Banner: 1128x191 (very wide and short — keep text centered). Company page cover: 1128x191. Article header: 1200x644.

YouTube

Thumbnail: 1280x720 (16:9). This is arguably the most important image a creator makes — it directly drives click-through rate. Use bold text, high contrast, and keep it readable at small sizes. Channel banner: 2560x1440 total, with safe area of 1546x423 in the center. Profile picture: 800x800.

TikTok

Video/content: 1080x1920 (9:16). Same as Instagram Stories/Reels. Profile picture: 200x200 minimum.

Discord

Server icon: 512x512 minimum (supports animated GIF for boosted servers). Server banner: 960x540 (requires Level 2 boost). Profile picture: 128x128 minimum, displayed as circle. Emoji: 128x128, under 256 KB. Stickers: 320x320, under 512 KB.

Tips for Multi-Platform Content

If you're creating one image for multiple platforms, design at 1080x1350 (4:5 portrait) — this works well on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook, and can be cropped to 16:9 for Twitter and YouTube. Use our image resizer to create platform-specific versions from your master file, the cropper to adjust aspect ratios, and the compressor to meet each platform's file size limits.

Format Recommendations

JPEG at quality 85-90 for photographs and complex images. PNG for graphics with text, logos, or transparency. WebP where supported (most platforms now accept it). Avoid BMP and TIFF — they're too large and not universally supported by social platforms.
