When to Use Each Format

Choosing the right image format matters for quality, file size, and compatibility. Here is a detailed comparison of the formats supported by this tool.

JPEG (JPG)

Best for photographs and complex images with many colors and gradients. JPEG uses lossy compression, which means it discards some visual data to achieve small file sizes. It does not support transparency. Use JPEG for photos on websites, email attachments, and social media posts. Typical file sizes are 50-80% smaller than uncompressed equivalents.

PNG

Best for graphics, logos, screenshots, and images that require transparency. PNG uses lossless compression, preserving every pixel perfectly. The tradeoff is larger file sizes compared to JPEG. Use PNG when you need crisp text, sharp edges, or transparent backgrounds.

WebP

A modern format developed by Google that offers both lossy and lossless compression. WebP files are typically 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPEG or PNG files. WebP supports transparency and animation. It is supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) but may not work in older software or email clients.

BMP

An uncompressed format that preserves every pixel with zero quality loss. BMP files are extremely large (a 1920x1080 image can be 6 MB+) and should only be used when you need completely unprocessed image data. Not recommended for web use.
